Improving your golf score is all about avoiding mistakes, and one of the worst mistakes is to ruin a hole with your tee shot. Choose designers create trouble you can find from the tee, including penalty areas. Finding a club you can trust to get you on the fairway safely nearly all the time can make a big difference.

One of my golf partners has made driver his best club, so he can rely on it to go straight down the middle of the fairway. Another in my regular foursome left driver at home for years and relied on his four or five iron to get him safely in play. One of the best go.fers I play with doesn't even carry the driver on his home course, which is rather short.

For me, the three hybrid is my safe shot off the tee. It reliably goes 210-220 yards, and my miss is to the left so I favor targets on the right. My four hybrid is shorter, as you would expect, but straighter than the three, so I sometimes use it off the tee to stay short of a fairway bunker.

With driver, I am more tempted to swing put of my shoes thinking I can connect with my rare 300-yard drive (downhill and downwind), but with less club off the tee I am more likely to put the ball where I aim.

If you track all your shots you will be able to identify which club serves you best off the tee. Relying on it more will save you some strokes on my your next outing.
