Golfers are competitive, and one of the best things about the game is that players with different skill levels can play together, have fun, and with the handicap system even compete on rather fair terms.

This means that you will end up playing with better and worse players in your foursome from time to time.

Beginners and high handicap golfers can be intimidated when paired with better players. They do not hit the ball as far or as straight. So how can the novice make a positive impression on the better player?

It's not by the quality or expense of your clubs, or the latest golf fashion. Having a graceful swing, you might think, would help. I have learned that the best way to impress better golfers is with your pace of play.

If you can play as fast as the best player in your group it doesn't matter how many shots you take. This means being ready for your next shot and not taking excessive practice swings or lingering over a putt.

Most golfers are so focused on their own game that they don't spend much time worrying about yours, but they do notice if you slow down the group.

So next time you get paired with a top golfer, see what happens when you keep up a risk pace of play. Who knows? It may even help your score as well.
